pioneer woman dirt cups

When it comes to Halloween treats, the scarier the better—and these dirt cups are as fun as they are delicious! Layers of rich homemade chocolate pudding, crushed chocolate cookies, and gummy candies come together to create a playful dessert that looks like it came straight from a haunted graveyard. They're cute on a treat table by themselves or served alongside spider cookies, Halloween brownies, monster bark, and savory mummy hot dogs for a full party spread!

These dirt cups are super easy to make ahead, too, and you can customize them with any creepy-crawly candy you like—gummy worms, spiders, or even candy bones and eyeballs. For the finishing touch, use an edible marker to transform vanilla sandwich cookies into tombstones.

Whether you’re hosting a Halloween party, sending treats to school, or just looking for a festive dessert to enjoy at home, these dirt cups are sure to disappear fast!

Can you make Halloween dirt cups ahead of time?

Yes! You can prepare the pudding and cookie layers up to 1 day in advance. Just add the candy decorations right before serving so they keep their texture.

What candy works best for Halloween dirt cups?

Gummy worms are the classic choice, but you can also use gummy spiders, candy bones, eyeballs, or even candy corn to make them festive. If it's not for Halloween, you can leave off the other candies and just use gummy worms. These dirt cups are great to make year-round!

Do you have to use homemade pudding for Halloween dirt cups?

Not at all, but it sure makes them taste extra special! The homemade chocolate pudding is super rich and delicious, but instant chocolate pudding mix works well, too, if you’re short on time.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups

    sugar

  • 1/4 cup

    cornstarch

  • 1/4 tsp.

    kosher salt

  • 3 cups

    whole milk

  • 4

    large egg yolks

  • 6 1/2 oz.

    bittersweet chocolate, broken into pieces

  • 2 Tbsp.

    salted butter

  • 2 tsp.

    vanilla extract

  • 16

chocolate sandwich cookies (such as Oreos), crushed

  • Mixed gummy worms and candies, for decorating

  • 6 vanilla wafer sandwich cookies (such as Pepperidge Farm Milanos)

  • Edible marker, for decorating

Directions

    1. Step 1Combine the sugar, cornstarch, and salt in a medium saucepan. Add the milk and egg yolks and whisk together. Place over medium heat and cook, stirring continuously with a rubber spatula, as the mixture comes to a simmer and becomes thick like pudding, 5 to 6 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the chocolate, butter, and vanilla until smooth and fully incorporated.
    2. Step 2Divide the pudding mixture between six 10-ounce glass tumblers and chill for about 1 hour.
    3. Step 3Top the pudding cups the crushed sandwich cookies. Add the gummies, partially burying them in the crushed cookies, as if they are emerging from the cookie dirt.
    4. Step 4Write "R.I.P." on the vanilla sandwich cookies with an edible marker, then place them in the glasses so that they stand upright and resemble tombstones.
