Craving a sweet, creamy treat after dinner? Shake up a classic grasshopper cocktail! With its signature pale green hue and refreshing mint-chocolate flavor, this retro drink is as delicious as it is beautiful. A simple blend of crème de menthe, crème de cacao, and cream creates a silky-smooth texture, almost like a grown-up milkshake. Serve this easy, three-ingredient cocktail in a chilled coupe glass and garnish with chocolate-covered mint candies. St. Patrick's Day drinks don't get more indulgent than this!

If you like the flavor of this cocktail, try this no-bake grasshopper pie next.

What is the origin of a grasshopper cocktail?

The grasshopper was created in the early 1900s by the owner of Tujague’s, a French Quarter restaurant in New Orleans. After earning second place in a cocktail competition in New York, the drink made its way back to the Crescent City, where it quickly became a beloved classic. The cocktail's name was inspired by its color.

Can it be made with white crème de menthe?

Yes. If you swap out the green crème de menthe for white, you'll have what is called a "White Grasshopper." The flavor remains the same, but you'll lose the vibrant green color.

What other garnishes can be used on a grasshopper cocktail?

You can get creative with garnishes like chocolate shavings, a fresh mint leaf, or keep it simple with no garnish at all.

Ingredients

  • 6

chocolate-covered mint candies (such as Junior Mints)

  • 4 oz.

    heavy cream

  • 2 oz.

    white crème de cacao

  • 2 oz.

    green crème de menthe

Directions

    1. Step 1To make the garnish, carefully thread 3 chocolate-covered mint candies on an extra-long toothpick, twisting as you press it through to keep the candies from breaking. Thread the remaining candies on a second toothpick.
    2. Step 2Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice. Add the heavy cream, crème de cacao, and crème de menthe. Cover, and shake vigorously until cold, 15 to 20 seconds. Strain into 2 chilled martini or coupe glasses and garnish with the mint candy skewers.
